Purchase Travel Insurance
Travel Insurance protects you in case of delays, cancellations, and other unforeseen circumstances that could impact your trip. It’s a good idea to purchase a travel insurance policy if you haven’t done so already.
You should also review your Medical Insurance policy for coverage during travel, including overseas medical evacuation. Then purchase a policy for anything that isn’t covered.
-
Download Google Translate
The Google Translate App is an excellent resource while traveling.
Make sure to download the offline translation file, or files, for the language/s you’ll need help with during your trip. You’ll be glad you did when you don’t have access to wifi or a data connection, but still need an assist with translation.
-
Check Your Luggage Allowance
Review the luggage allowances for your flights in your itinerary.
This information can also be found in the Luggage document found in AXUS under the Documents section.
-
Purchase a Luggage Tracker
Consider purchasing a smart tag, or tags, to pack in your luggage to assist if one or more of your bags go missing.
Click HERE for a review from Travel & Leisure of tracking devices.
-
Check Your Mobile Plan
Check with your mobile provider to find out what coverage is included while you are away, as well as roaming costs.
Wifi calling is an option on many phones, and calling via apps such as Facetime, Telegram and WhatsApp are good options, too - but these services only work when you are connected to a wifi or mobile data network.
You may want to consider purchasing an eSIM before you leave to ensure you have coverage as soon as you land.
-
Enroll in STEP - U.S. Citizens
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service which allows U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
The key benefit of enrolling is that it assists the U.S. Embassy in contacting you in an emergency, such as a natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency.
-
Download a VPN
A VPN protects your data when you connect to public and private wifi networks while travelling.
In addtion, some countries block access to certain websites (e.g. China blocks Google & Meta sites). In this instance, downloading a VPN before you leave home is essential if you want to be able to log into and use certain accounts.
